Green and Blue Master Plan
Vision
"To make Bhopal the most livable and the most environmentally sustainable and self-sufficient city in the country using the latest sustainable growth planning methods."
The main objectives of the Green and Blue Master Plan for Bhopal Smart City are as follows:
- To develop and implement policies, programs, and projects that mainstream integrated urban planning and environmental management that will enhance social and environmental sustainability of urban infrastructure and services
- To achieve a 100% green buildings and neighbourhoods in phases
- To provide the basic services (e.g. water supply, sewerage, and urban transport) to all households and build amenities for all
- To plan full utilization of land parcels
Sector Specific Smart Intervention Projects
Five major sectors have been identified for the study: energy, buildings, waste and water, green and blue, and transport. Specific interventions have been proposed in these sectors to reduce their energy demand, increase energy efficiency and switch to cleaner modes of fuel.
Building Sector
100% Green Buildings in Bhopal by 2036
Plan envisages phase-wise transition of existing building stock into green buildings by 2036:
Phase 1: Energy Conservation (2020-2031)
Phase 2: Water Conservation (2021- 2032)
Phase 3: Housekeeping & Water Management (2022-2033)
- Carbon Neutral building for Smart City Office
This project proposes to develop the new office of Bhopal Smart City as a model carbon neutral building. Creating a model building in the city will encourage the developers and builders to follow suite and there will be an increase in construction of net zero or green buildings within the city. - Capacity Building and awareness of ECBC guidelines
An advocacy and capacity development project under which capacity building of various categories of stakeholders will be undertaken. To ensure implementation of the ECBC / MP-ECBC guidelines, appropriate capacity and awareness of residents/builders/workers etc. needed. Builders, designers, architects and skilled labourers will be trained by experts to integrate the concept of green buildings in the construction process. - Urban Green Lab
This project is for the development of a testing laboratory in the city to test as well as certify various types of green building materials, solar panels and electric vehicle battery. Bhopal Green Lab will be housed in the testing facility of the proposed Bhopal Living Lab in a 2,000 sqft unit.
Energy Sector
- Building Energy Management System (BEMS)
A refined way to monitor and control the building’s energy needs – using sensors, internet systems and optimization software. This system can monitor and control varied requirements of the building irrespective of its usage like HVAC, lighting or security measures. - Pumping Efficiency Improvements
To increase water supply pumping efficiency in 33 selected low efficiency pumps in Bhopal Municipal Corporation area - RajajikaKuwan Pumping Station, Idgah WTP, Bairagarh WTP, Yatch club 1, Bairagarh Raw Water (Old), Bairagarh New WTP, Kamala Park and Fatehgarh (Badal Mahal). Installation of capacitor bank to improve power factor. - Pole Top Solar Lighting for public parks
Pole mounted street lights to be fitted with solar panels in parks and gardens of BMC. In the day time the power generated is pushed into the grid and in the evening the lights draw power from the grid. 1,720 light poles can be fitted with 300W pole top solar panels. - Mysolar App
An app for MPMKVVCL consumers in Bhopal will be developed to promote Solar Rooftop Systems. Consumers can install the app on their smartphones, input their area of roof top and connected load/area of building, no. of appliances, hours of operation etc. and then apply for the same. Output calculator will give the solar power generation potential, capacity of solar panel required, cost/subsidies of solar rooftop installation, energy usage from solar panel and total savings per month.
Green and Blue Cover
- Urban Forest Creation and Management
Creation of multi-functional spaces under urban forestry in strategic locations, those are diverse, healthy, and accessible for all citizens. This includes natural solutions in the wider water catchment, such as targeted tree and woodland planting to improve water quality, and to hold back water and reduce flooding in downstream urban areas. Identified sites are Kaliasot, Jahangirabad, Laharpur, LaharpurNala, Hataikheda, Upper Lake and Patra Nala, in total covers 10.6 km2.
The project also includes Sustainable drainage systems(SuDS) components. It will manage volume and flow rates of run-off to reduce the downstream flow and reduce the risk of flooding. It also reduce pollution downstream of development and promote recharging of Groundwater.
Transportation Sector - Development of Pedestrian, Cyclist and Transport Infrastructure in Bhopal
Creation of Pedestrian and Bicycle Infrastructure for Bhopal Smart City addresses 153.02 km of Green Corridors/ Green Ways identified to serve as arterial network and include Footpaths, Cycle Tracks and Pedestrian Cross Overs and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) components. Three sites identified for pilot projects are Kaliasot Canal Corridor, Jahangirabad Corridor and MotiaTalabBadaBagh Corridor. - Operating Buses on Biogas from STP
50 Operating Buses can be run using the Biogas produced from the 7 Sewage Treatment Plants (55 MLD) in Bhopal. Through anaerobic digestion, microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen to produce methane (biogas). Biogas can be used to run buses at much cheaper rates. - E-Mobility: Electric Buses in Bhopal
The project is to operate Electric Hybrid Midi Bus Service in Bhopal. The Electric buses will reduce energy consumption, provide ease of prior planning of Travel in Bhopal, point-to-point connectivity and cover shorter distances, complement existing Public Transport Services.
Water and Waste
- Decentralized Waste Water Treatments Systems (DEWATS)
Decentralized waste water treatment systems ensures that sewage istreated at source and reused which not only saves considerable capitalexpenditure for the city but also promotes resource recycling. 4 localities have been identified - Aakriti Eco City (Misrod Ward), Chinar Fortune City (Misrod Ward), Meenakshi Planet City (Bagmugaliya Ward), Pebble Bay (Bagmugaliya Ward). - Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting (RRWH) App
Interactive App for Promoting Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting (RRWH) in Bhopal. The app will serve as a module within the “Bhopal Plus” app and its main objective will be to generate awareness about rainwater harvesting.
